La mia Pittura
Introduzione
Tutto cominciò negli anni della mia adolescenza, quando passavo molto del mio tempo libero a disegnare visi di donne immaginate – in seguito riconosciute come ‘ideali’ di quello che io avrei voluto essere.
La consapevolezza del piacere nel disegnare crebbe nel tempo, con l’insegnamento di Maria dal Conte alla Scuola Superiore; di Liliana Barbieri dopo l’Università e con la conoscenza della Professoressa Rossana Bossaglia.
Quando diventai Insegnante d’Inglese, dopo l’Università Bocconi in Milano (un’esperienza coinvolgente in quel suo schiudersi a nuove culture e a nuovi mondi), l’impatto fra le due attività (pittura e insegnamento) divenne inestricabile.
L’ esito di questo impatto fu un profondo interesse nelle elaborazioni della mente e nel loro conseguente esprimersi in parole o in altri segni - mentre evolveva la mia ricerca sia nei metodi di insegnamento, sia nelle tecniche della pittura.
In “Pensiero e Parola” (da “Pensiero e Linguaggio” 1934) lo Psicologo L.S. Vygotskij scriveva:
“Il nostro parlare quotidiano oscilla continuamente fra un ideale di armonia matematica e un ideale di armonia immaginativa.”
Questa frase divenne una prima pietra miliare nella mia ricerca. L’ idea di un dualismo nella mente divenne, per me, la spiegazione di due tendenze che si stavano istintivamente evolvendo nella mia pittura, nell’ uso di due tecniche che io, in realtà, non ho mai visto in contrasto fra loro, ma piuttosto come due espressioni della natura multiforme che è in ciascuno di noi.
Una delle due tecniche sembra a me prevalentemente ‘filosofica’, basata su una percezione ‘a priori’ del pensiero e dell’emozione che si evolve e si traduce in una ‘mediata’ realizzazione.
L’altra tecnica è più ‘immaginativa’, basata sullo svolgersi ‘immediato’ dell’emozione e del pensiero nell’amalgamarsi dei colori fluidi che richiedono un coinvolgimento istantaneo, in rapporto con il Caso, in drammatico impatto con il Caos.
Poi, un giorno, si realizza un dipinto che – in una ninfea fiorita su onde di viola, di verde e di oro, o in un sacro fiore di loto, o nell’incanto di una forma geometrica, una sfera o un triangolo in pura foglia d’oro - sembra raggiungere la sintesi.
Un ulteriore tratto unificante fra le due tendenze sta nel loro ‘metafisico’ intento – sulla scia del Grande Giorgio De Chirico – di svelare il senso nascosto dell’esistere, del mondo dentro di noi e intorno a noi, nell’essenza profonda della splendida natura.

I fiori erano forme immaginate, in un periodo in cui mi rivolgevo a ben noti versi come mia seconda pietra milare:

Poi venne il periodo di “The Sick Rose” (La Rosa Malata) del poeta e pittore William Blake – e delle sue “Visioni”. Ben presto l’attrazione incluse tutti i grandi Romantici e, più tardi, i Pre-Raffaelliti. Fu il periodo dei grandi temi della Natura e di “Terra”, “Aria”, “Acqua”, “Fuoco”, visti come gli elementi fondamentali della Vita. Fu il tempo delle atmosfere ‘Gotiche’, dei ‘Giardini Orientali’ e del fascino dall’Oriente.
Poi venne il 20° Secolo con le sue rivoluzioni nelle Arti, nelle Scienze, nelle Tecnologie - e nelle connessioni fra i tre campi, alla ricerca di nuovi esiti e significati. In “Rapsodia in una Notte di Vento” di T.S. Eliot io vedevo l’inquietudine dei tempi dovuta al frammentarsi delle passate certezze Romantiche e degli ordini stabiliti. In W.B. Yeats vedevo le complessità di un desiderio di rinascita, un “Veleggiare verso Bisanzio”, verso una vita al tempo stesso pratica, estetica e spirituale. (A questi due poeti ho associato due miei quadri).
“Infinities”
All’alba del nuovo millennio si è andata diffondendo la consapevolezza di quanto la meraviglia per il mistero proveniente - come sentivano i Romantici – dall’ignoto, ormai contendesse con lo stupore per quello che le scienze andavano (e vanno) svelando, senza pensabili confini allo sgomento e alla fascinazione.
E’ in questo clima che, un giorno, avendo cominciato un quadro con l’idea di fiori nella mente, poi, alla fine, mi resi conto che le forme che stavo osservando erano diventate cellule.
E’ in modo analogo che, in altri momenti, guardando la luce del Sole e della Luna, mi sono trovata istintivamente coinvolta in quello che è ormai un viaggio frequentemente intrapreso, dall’infinitamente piccolo all’infinitamente grande, col desiderio di viaggiare emotivamente sempre più in là, spingendo la mia immaginazione a esplorare l’Universo.
Di qui “Infinities” (“Infiniti”) - titolo suggerito da quella che considero la mia terza pietra miliare: la rappresentazione fatta da Luca Ronconi di“Infinities”di John D. Barrow, a Milano nel 2003.
Attualmente, nella vastità dell’esigenza senza fine della bellezza, della sintesi ultima, della armonia delle armonie – come ho scritto altrove – mi affido in grande misura all’uso dell’oro per trasmettere il senso della ‘mia’ meraviglia e trovo illuminante rivolgermi a un poeta Romantico per quella che potrebbe essere una ulteriore, ‘inclusiva’ pietra miliare. Penso ai versi di John Keats dalla sua“Ode on a Grecian Urn” (“Ode su un’ Urna Greca”), così citati oggi, anche messi in discussione, a me perfettamente chiari all’interno della logica della Poesia:
“. . . ‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty’ – that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”
(“. . . ‘Bellezza è verità, verità è bellezza’ – è tutto quanto tu, in questa terra, sai e quanto ti è necessario sapere.”)

About my Painting
Introduction
It all started in my adolescent years, when I spent much of my free time drawing the faces of imagined women - later recognised as ‘ideals’ of how I would actually have liked to be.
Consciousness of pleasure in drawing grew in time through the teachings of Maria Dal Conte at High School, of Liliana Barbieri after University, and through the acquaintance of Professor Rossana Bossaglia.
As I became a teacher of English, after Bocconi University, in Milan (a captivating experience opening to new cultures and new worlds), the clash between the two activities - painting and teaching - grew inextricable.
The issue of such impact was deep interest in the workings of the mind and their consequent modes of expression - whether in words or other signs – concerning both my search for teaching methods and trends in painting techniques.
“Our daily speech continually fluctuates between an ideal of mathematical and of imaginative harmony”.
This remark became a first milestone in my research. The idea of a dualism in the mind became, to me, the explanation of the two trends that were instinctively developing in my painting, calling for two techniques that I have actually never seen in contrast with each other, but rather as two expressions of the multiform nature present in each of us.
One of the two techniques seems to me mostly ‘philosophical’, based on a perception ‘a priori’ of thought and emotion, evolved and conveyed through a ‘mediated’ performance.
The other technique is more ‘imaginative’, relying on ‘immediate’ unfolding of emotion and thought, through the blending of fluid colours, calling for ‘instant’ involvement, in relation with Chance, dramatic impact with Chaos.
Then, one day, there comes a painting that - in a water-lily blooming on waves of violet, green, and gold, or in a sacred lotus, or in the spell of a geometric form such as a sphere or a triangle shining with pure gold leaf - seems to reach the synthesis.
A further unifying link between the two trends lies in their ‘metaphysical’ aim - on the wake of great Giorgio De Chirico - to unveil the core of the hidden sense of existence, of the world within us and around us, deep into the essence of splendid nature.
First Themes
The titles of my first paintings (from the early 70’s) were:
’La fleur du Mal’ - ’La Fleur de la Clarté’
Ideas - The Workings of the Mind
The Question - The Cave
’La Fleur de la Beauté - The Sphere (and the pointed Arch)
Flowers were ‘imagined’ forms, at a time in which I turned to well-known lines as my second milestone:
“. . . And as imagination bodies forth The forms of things unknown, the poet’s pen Turns them to shapes, and gives to airy nothing A local habitation and a name. . . .”

Then came the appeal of “The Sick Rose” by poet and painter William Blake – and the appeal of his “Visions”. Soon the attraction came to include all the great Romantics, and, later, the Pre-Raphaelites. It was the time of the great themes of Nature, and of ‘Earth’, ‘Air’, ‘Water’ and ‘Fire’, viewed as the basic elements of Life. It was the time of ’Gothic’ atmospheres, of ’Oriental Gardens’, and the charm coming from the Far East.
Then came the 20th Century with its revolutions in the Arts, in the Sciences, in Technologies – the three fields sharing links in the search of new issues and meanings. In “Rhapsody in a Windy Night” by T. S. Eliot I saw the inquietude of the times, brought forth by fragmentation of past Romantic certitudes and established orders. In W. B. Yeats I viewed the depths and complexities of a rebirth and a “Sailing to Byzantium”. (To these poets I linked two of my paintings).
Infinities.
At the dawn of the new millennium consciousness has been widely spreading of the marvel for the mystery that once came - as the Romantics felt - from the unknown, contending, by now, with the marvel of what the sciences are unveiling, with no conceivable boundaries to dismay and fascination.
It is in this climax that, one day, I started a painting having flowers in my mind and, in the end, I realised that the shapes I was looking at had turned out to be cells.
It is then, in a similar way that, at other moments, while looking at the lights of the Sun and the Moon, I found myself instinctively involved in what is, by now, a frequently undertaken shifting from the infinitely small to the infinitely big, feeling the wish to travel further emotionally, urging my imagination to explore the Universe.
Hence came “Infinities”- the title being suggested by what I viewed as my third milestone: Luca Ronconi’s performance of John D. Barrow’s “Infinities” which took place in Milan in 2003.
At present, in the wideness of the endless quest for beauty, for the ultimate synthesis, or ‘harmony of harmonies’, as I said somewhere else, I rely – to a great extent – on the use of gold to convey the sense of ‘my’ marvel, and find it enlightening to turn to a Romantic poet for what might be a further, ‘comprehensive’ milestone. I am thinking of John Keats’s lines ” so often quoted these days, even questioned, to me perfectly clear within the logic of poetry:
“. . . ‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty’ – that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”
